The Kansas City VAMC has a vacancy for a
full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Emergency Department. The NP must hold
certification as either an Adult NP or a Family NP with current BLS/ACLS. The
Kansas City VA Medical Center is a non-trauma emergency service. The NP will
serve as provider for assessment and care in a Level III emergent/urgent care
area. S/he will see EIS Level 4 and 5 patients, and patients with Level 1-3
under the supervision of the physician on duty. The provider must work with
other physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners,
residents, medical support staff and others as assigned to perform duties to
accomplish the needs of this Medical Center. The NP tour of duty will be eight hour shifts, Monday through Friday; these shifts may start as early as 7:00 AM and end as late as! 9:00 PM. The NP in this position reports to the Director of t! he Emergency
Department/Primary Care and Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department.
The Kansas City Veterans Affairs
Medical Center is a tertiary care facility and is classified as a Clinical
Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital providing a full range of
patient services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and
research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care and
tertiary care in subspecialty medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine
and rehabilitation. Kansas City is a major metropolitan area with a low cost of
living and some of the most affordable housing in the nation. The area has been
designated one of the most "livable" cities in the United States,
with an excellent school system, attractive parkways, gardens, and Plazas. The
"City of Fountains" offers big city attractions including NASCAR,
major league sports, housing festivals, superb visual and per! forming arts, and
great jazz.

Clinical privileges
must be recommended by the Chief, Staff/Professional Standards Board and
granted by the Director of Kansas City VAMC. The provider must provide complete
credentialing and privileging information in a timely, expeditious way to the
Credentialing Office. Employment is contingent on the ability of the provider
to be credentialed by the VA Credentialing Office.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

Patient Care: The
providers on duty in the ED are responsible for the care of all patients
presenting to either urgent care or the emergency department during his/her
tour of duty (shift).
·
The provider
shall be familiar with KC VA Medical CenterÂ's disaster policy and while on duty
would be responsible for the treatment of all casualties until the arrival of
additional medical staff.
·
Medical and
surgical residents are in-house 24/7 and consultation! s readily available and
the NP will work collaboratively with them.
·
The provider
shall page and speak with the surgeon on-call to discuss all surgical
admissions; the psychiatrist on-call to discuss all suicidal, homicidal,
acutely psychotic patients; and the internist on-call to discuss all admissions
to the ward or medical ICU.
·
The provider
shall make telephone arrangements when a patient needs to be transferred to
another hospital in compliance with Kansas City VA Medical Center policy 11-50
and COBRA laws. The ED physician is also responsible for obtaining the
patientÂ's written prior to transfer.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of profess! ional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and ! accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puer! to Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
MSN; Adult NP or
Family NP certification; previous acute care experience preferred; current
BLS/ACLS required.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The person in this position must be able to navigate all areas of the VA Kansas
City Healthcare System, and must be
physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position
without hazard to themselves or others; stand, walk, bend, stoop, raise arms
above shoulder level, climb stairs, use a keyboard, transfer/move adult male
& female patients using appropriate assistive devices, push/pull an
occupied gurney, and perform all other activities of the position
without restrictions. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a
sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent,
sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent
changes in a sometimes noisy environment.
There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent
exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials. The use of Safe Patient Handling equipment and protocols are strictly enforced to promote patient and staff safe! ty.
